Oregano (Lippia graveolens) – A Bold, Aromatic Herb
Unlike Mediterranean oregano, Mexican oregano (Lippia graveolens) belongs to the verbena family (Verbenaceae), not the mint family. Native to the southwestern United States, Mexico, and Central America, this aromatic herb is a staple in regional cuisine. With a stronger, more bitter, and robust flavor, Mexican oregano holds up well against bold spices like cumin and hot chilies, making it an essential ingredient in dishes such as birria, pozole, and traditional Mexican soups. Our organic Mexican oregano leaf can be incorporated into spice blends, generously used in cooking, or steeped as an herbal tea.
Beyond its culinary uses, Mexican oregano has a long history in traditional herbalism. It has been steeped into teas to support respiratory health and digestive well-being. In certain regions, it grows alongside Turnera diffusa (Damiana), sharing similar growing conditions and harvesting methods, though Mexican oregano tends to be a slightly larger shrub.
No known precautions. However, we recommend consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
