Paprika Powder

Paprika, originally native to South America, was later naturalized in Hungary and Spain. It is made from the dried red fruits of the Capsicum annuum plant, with its vibrant color attributed to carotenoids. Our paprika is on the sweeter side, but you can also find spicier varieties available. Often used as a garnish or coloring agent, paprika is especially popular in Hungarian cuisine.

While most commonly recognized as a culinary spice, paprika shares the medicinal properties of other red peppers in the Capsicum family. The spicier variety is Hungarian paprika, which is what many people typically associate with paprika. Paprika is often used in egg and potato dishes, and it adds both color and mild heat. Depending on the ratio of seed, rind, and fruit in the powder, its spice level can vary. Other types of paprika, such as smoked or roasted, offer a mildly smoky flavor that complements various dishes. Though paprika does contain capsaicin, the compound responsible for the heat in peppers, its heat level is relatively mild compared to other chilies. It is also rich in vitamin C and carotenoids, offering health benefits when consumed fresh. Paprika is part of the Solanaceae family.

Our paprika powder typically ranges between 300 – 800 Scoville Heat Units (HU) and is considered mild. The Scoville scale measures the pungency of chili peppers based on their capsaicin content. Paprika’s primary use is as a spice that enhances the flavor and color of dishes. It can vary from mild and sweet to spicy, with Hungarian paprika being particularly well-known for its heat and bold flavor.
