pau d’arco powder is made from the finely ground inner bark of Tabebuia impetiginosa, a large deciduous hardwood tree native to the tropical regions of Central and South America. Known for its pink, trumpet-shaped flowers, the pau d’arco tree has been used for generations, with its wood being crafted into bows and its bark valued for its wellness-supporting properties. The Guarani, Tupi tribes of Brazil, and the Incas have relied on pau d’arco for centuries. Pau d’arco bark powder can be made into tinctures, encapsulated, or incorporated into skin care formulations.
As one of the most well-known yet least understood herbs from the Amazon Rainforest, pau d’arco plays a central role in tribal medicine. This towering tree, reaching up to 125 feet, has been historically used by indigenous tribes, not only for its medicinal qualities but also for crafting bows. Some native names for the tree even mean “bow stick” or “bow stem.”
Common preparations of pau d’arco include tea and liquid extract. For tincture use, it’s often combined with water and a little lemon juice to aid the absorption of tannins through the colon. Tabebuia impetiginosa belongs to the Bignoniaceae family.
