Schisandra chinensis, also known as magnolia berry or five-flavor-fruit, is a prominent herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is believed to encompass all five fundamental flavors: salty, sweet, sour, pungent, and bitter. This deciduous, woody vine thrives in the forests of northern China and eastern Russia. Schisandra berries are commonly used in these regions to make juices, wines, extracts, and sweets. The berries can be macerated in fruit juice, tinctured, or steeped to create a soothing schisandra berry tea.
In Chinese folklore, Schisandra is said to “calm the heart and quiet the spirit.” Known for its adaptogenic properties, it has been a staple in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. Native to northern China, Russia, and parts of Korea, Schisandra is an ornamental plant admired worldwide. This woody vine has oval pink leaves and vibrant red berries. Schisandra’s Chinese name, wu-wei-zi, translates to “five-taste fruit,” referring to its combination of sour, sweet, bitter, warm, and salty flavors. In Russia, hunters have relied on Schisandra tea for centuries to combat fatigue. The plant is also referred to as northern schisandra or schizandra and belongs to the Schisandraceae family.
For a simple infusion, take 1 teaspoon of Schisandra and mix it into fruit juice. To make a larger batch, pour ½ cup of berries into a 1-gallon pitcher of dark fruit juice and let it soak for 1 day. Strain and drink as needed. Schisandra can also be added to tea decoctions, herbal brews (soft simmer), or used as a liquid herbal extract. For a homemade syrup, soak the berries in glycerin for a month.
The white film on the berries is crystallized sucrose from the berry itself. Always consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using with medications.
