Senna (Senna alexandrina)
Senna alexandrina is a shrubby plant known for its yellow flowers that develop into oblong, flat fruits and long, spreading branches. Native to northern Egypt, it is also cultivated in regions of India, Sudan, and Somalia. A member of the Fabaceae family, both senna leaf and pod have a long tradition of use for their wellness-supporting properties. They are commonly included in herbal formulations, teas, and extracts. Senna leaves are considered more potent than the pods and are sometimes used for topical applications.
Senna promotes bowel movements by inhibiting the smooth muscles that retain stool and stimulating the smooth muscles responsible for pushing stool through the intestines. For the herb to be effective, the sennosides within it must be transformed into rheinanthrones by beneficial bacteria in the colon.
As always, we recommend consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
