Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella)
Rumex acetosella, commonly known as sheep sorrel, is often viewed as a weed, but it has been used for centuries as both a spice and for its beneficial properties. Native to Europe and Asia, sheep sorrel now grows prolifically throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Our organic sheep sorrel herb, also spelled sheep sorrell, can be infused for topical use, steeped as a tea, or added to culinary dishes for its distinct tart flavor.
Though often categorized as a noxious weed, with 45 out of 50 states reporting its presence, sheep sorrel has a longstanding reputation as a beneficial herb. This small, creeping plant holds culinary value and is often used as a garnish or tart flavoring agent in salads, soups, and is a key ingredient in Chinese hot and sour soup. Its cooling properties make it a refreshing addition to drinks and soups, while its sharp flavor perfectly balances spicy herbs and seeds. Sheep sorrel belongs to the Polygonaceae family.
Use with caution in individuals with a history of kidney stones. It is recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or on medications.
