White willow (Salix alba) is a medium-sized deciduous tree with slender, green leaves and gray-green bark. Traditionally used in European herbalism, its bark contains salicin, the natural compound that inspired the development of aspirin. White willow bark can be brewed as tea, encapsulated, tinctured, or used topically.
Willow trees grow throughout North America, northern Asia, and parts of Africa. Indigenous healers utilized willow bark for its beneficial properties long before European explorers arrived. In 1828, German chemist Felix Hoffmann isolated salicin, leading to Bayer’s production of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) in 1899—one of the earliest modern pain relievers. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), white willow is known as bai liu pi and belongs to the Salicaceae family.
Avoid use if allergic to aspirin or other salicylates. Not recommended for children or adolescents with viral infections due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome. Consult a healthcare practitioner before use, especially if pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
