Blackberry, known for its sweet, sun-ripened fruits, is easily recognized for its flavorful berries. Rubus fruticosus has a long tradition of use for its health benefits. The leaves of the blackberry plant can be brewed into a gentle astringent tonic, offering a pleasant, fruity flavor when used in herbal teas. Blackberries grow in small clusters known as drupelets on bushy vines, typically referred to as brambles due to their thorny nature. These brambles can become quite invasive if not controlled. In some earth-based and Wiccan traditions, blackberry leaves are believed to help return negative energy to those who sent it and can even be used to clear evil spirits from a home. A British superstition warns against picking blackberries after September 29th (Michaelmas), claiming that the devil has marked them after urinating on the leaves. While this legend is rooted in folklore, it does coincide with wetter, cooler weather that can lead to mold infections like Botryotinia, which can affect the fruit’s appearance and potentially its safety.
