Dong Quai, known as “female ginseng,” has been celebrated for its healthful properties, tonic actions, and use as a spice throughout Asia for over two thousand years. Native to the cool, damp high-altitude regions of China and Japan, Angelica sinensis thrives in cold, moist soils and grows up to three feet tall. The root, harvested in autumn, is a staple in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is commonly used in tea infusions or tinctures. Dong Quai is often combined with other botanicals in herbal formulations, particularly to support women’s health.
In TCM, Dong Quai is a revered herb, with the name “dong quai” meaning “state of return,” inspired by an ancient Chinese legend in which an angel instructed a monk to use the herb to cure a plague. Dong Quai is part of the Apiaceae family and produces small white flowers, adding to its beauty and medicinal value.
Dong Quai should not be used during pregnancy unless under the supervision of a qualified healthcare practitioner. It is also not recommended for use with blood-thinning medications. We advise consulting with a healthcare professional before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medications.
