Maqui Berries Organic

Maqui Berry (Aristotelia chilensis): A Tasty Superfood from South America

Maqui, also known as Chilean wineberry, is a small evergreen tree native to the temperate rainforests of Chile and Argentina. The tree produces purple-black berries, similar in taste to blackberries, which are harvested seasonally by the Mapuche people. Maqui berries are often enjoyed in traditional beverages, culinary dishes, and are known to boost the flavor and nutritional value of smoothies, granolas, health drinks, and herbal teas.

Maqui belongs to the Elaeocarpaceae family and reaches heights of 3-4 meters. Its smooth bark and star-shaped flowers yield edible berries, which are enjoyed by both people and wildlife. First documented by botanist Claude Grey in 1844, the berries were widely used by the Mapuche for their energizing properties, often consumed as a tonic or in fermented drinks like chicha.

Dried maqui berries are gaining popularity as a “superfood” in the American market. They can be eaten raw, made into jam, or used in various recipes.
