Native to western North America, Berberis aquifolium is recognized for its yellow roots, holly-like leaves, and tart, blue berries that grow in clusters resembling grapes. Commonly known as Oregon grape, this plant belongs to the Berberidaceae family and is rich in berberine, a compound believed to contribute to many of its health-supporting properties. Often used as a substitute for goldenseal, Oregon grape root can be extracted, added to herbal teas, or incorporated into topical care formulas.
Oregon grape thrives in the Pacific Northwest and other mountainous regions of western North America. This bushy perennial features glossy, spiny leaves that turn vibrant shades of orange and red as they age. The plant typically reaches two to six feet in height and produces small, dark blue berries that are edible but highly tart, with a flavor likened to a mix of a Vitamin C tablet and aspirin. It is also referred to by other names, such as holly-leaf barberry, mountain grape, and Oregon barberry. The plant may also be listed under the botanical synonym Mahonia.
The yellow root of Oregon grape is commonly harvested for its medicinal properties and is sometimes used as a substitute for goldenseal. Known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, it has been traditionally used as a bitter tonic to support digestion and for external applications to treat skin irritations. Although in vitro studies suggest the root’s antimicrobial effects, human clinical trials are lacking.
