California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica)
A member of the Papaveraceae family, Eschscholzia californica, commonly known as the California poppy, is native to the western United States and Mexico. The plant is easily recognized by its vibrant orange petals, which open wide in the sunlight and close at night or on overcast days. California poppy is often incorporated into botanical formulations, brewed as a calming tea, or prepared as a tincture.
Known as the state flower of California, this tender perennial features blue-green leaves and 2 to 4-inch-wide flowers. The plant thrives in full sun and is celebrated for its striking color and dynamic movement. The exact origins of the California poppy are somewhat mysterious, but it has a long history of use among Native American communities in California, who valued it for both its edible properties and the oil that could be extracted from the plant. Today, the dried aerial parts of the California poppy are typically used in tinctures or infusions. It is often blended with herbs like birthwort, night-blooming cereus, kava, lavender, passionflower, St. John’s wort, and valerian.
