Plantain Leaf Organic

Organic Plantain Leaf

Plantago lanceolata, a resilient herbaceous perennial in the Plantaginaceae family, is native to temperate Eurasia and has since spread across the Americas and Australia. This versatile plant thrives in disturbed areas, commonly found in pastures, gardens, and even sidewalk cracks. Historically valued for both culinary and herbal purposes, young spring leaves can be eaten fresh in salads or added to soups. Our organic plantain leaf is a wonderful addition to teas and herbal blends.

Traditional Uses & Folklore

Plantain has a long history in Western herbalism, often infused with other botanicals for its beneficial properties. According to folklore, the leaves were chewed and placed on the skin to help draw out splinters and other irritants. The plant is commonly used in skin care applications and herbal infusions.

Two well-known species are preferred in herbal traditions: narrowleaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata), also called ribwort, and broadleaf plantain (Plantago major), also known as greater plantain. Narrowleaf plantain features long, lance-shaped leaves with 3-5 prominent veins, while broadleaf plantain has wider, oval-shaped leaves with 5-9 distinct veins. Both species can be used interchangeably.
