Thyme is a woody herb from the mint family, found both in the wild and in gardens around the world. Known for its aromatic qualities, thyme has been used for thousands of years to flavor and preserve foods and beverages. In medieval times, thyme leaves symbolized courage, and in ancient Greece, they represented the virtues of grace and bravery. Dried thyme leaves can be added to culinary recipes, infused into thyme tea, or blended into herbal syrups.
Thyme grows to about 15 inches (40 cm) tall, featuring small rounded leaves and pink flowers on woody stems. It is distinct from other varieties like mother of thyme or wild thyme. Native to the southern Mediterranean, thyme is now widespread across North America. Its name is derived from the Greek word “thumus”, meaning courage. In the Middle Ages, knights would wear thyme sprigs on their armor as a sign of strength in battle.
Thyme is a beloved herb in Mediterranean and French cuisines, especially in vegetables, soups, and stews. It is also a key ingredient in the herbes de Provence seasoning blend.
