Arnica montana: A Traditional Herb for Topical Use
Arnica montana, a member of the Asteraceae (sunflower) family, is easily recognized by its large, bright yellow flower heads. Native to Europe, this perennial herb has also naturalized in mountainous regions of North America. Traditionally, arnica flowers are infused into oils to create arnica oil, a key ingredient in various topical formulations.
This graceful woodland plant thrives in Central Europe and the western United States. The yellow flowers are harvested at the end of summer and dried for traditional use. Many species of arnica are found globally, but Arnica montana is the most commercially available. Its natural range spans from the southern Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia.
Arnica flowers bloom from mid-summer through autumn. To ensure optimal quality, the flowers are best harvested early in their blooming season. The dried flowers are lightweight, fluffy, and fibrous but can irritate the nose if handled without care. Common names for Arnica montana include European arnica, leopard’s bane, and mountain tobacco.
