Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis): A Soothing Herb for the Body and Skin
Marshmallow is a herbaceous perennial found in damp environments like riverbanks and marshes. The leaves of this mucilage-rich plant are often used in skin care, herbal syrups, and tea. Marshmallow has been used for thousands of years in various cultures for its soothing and moisturizing properties, especially for mucous membranes.
Native to northern Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia, marshmallow was historically used by the Egyptians and Greeks. It was also the main ingredient in the original marshmallow confectionery. The plant grows to a height of 2-5 feet and bears soft, velvety leaves with small, star-shaped flowers. The leaves, root, and flowers can all be used for medicinal purposes, with the leaves typically used for respiratory and urinary tract support, while the root is more commonly used for digestive and topical applications.
Marshmallow can be used in culinary dishes, herbal teas, and even as a poultice for irritated skin. Modern uses still include its role in soothing the throat and moisturizing tissues.
Precautions
Should be taken with at least 250 mL (8 oz) of liquid. Marshmallow may slow the absorption of orally administered drugs, so it’s best to take them at least 1 hour before or several hours after using marshmallow. Always consult a healthcare practitioner before using herbal products, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or on any medications.
