For centuries, Native Americans have revered slippery elm bark for its soothing and restorative properties. This large, deciduous tree, native to eastern North America, is valued for its mucilaginous and nutritive qualities. Our slippery elm powder is finely ground from the inner bark of Ulmus rubra and can be used topically, infused into skincare products, or steeped into a nourishing, mucilaginous drink.
Slippery elm thrives across North America, from Texas to Manitoba and Florida to Quebec. When grown in well-drained soils, it can reach heights of 60 feet (20 meters). The inner bark is harvested in spring, when its beneficial compounds are most concentrated.
When mixed with room temperature water, slippery elm bark forms a soothing, gel-like consistency. Indigenous tribes used the soaked bark as natural bandages, wrapped it around stored food to prevent spoilage, and even relied on it as a nourishing food source during times of famine. It was commonly made into porridge for children and the elderly, providing gentle digestive support.
