Usnea spp., commonly known as “old man’s beard,” is a lichen—a symbiotic organism combining algae and fungi—that thrives on conifers, oaks, and fruit trees throughout the northern hemisphere. With its long, flexible, gray-green threads, usnea is especially abundant on trees in the Pacific Northwest. Energetically cooling and drying, usnea has been valued in traditional folk herbalism for its supportive properties. It can be prepared as an extract, used topically, or steeped into a soothing usnea tea.
The many species of Usnea are difficult to distinguish from one another and are generally used interchangeably.
