Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, commonly known as uva ursi or bearberry, is a low-growing, evergreen shrub found in mountainous regions across the northern hemisphere. A member of the Ericaceae family, this plant features thick, leathery leaves and clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers. Its bright red berries, which resemble miniature grapes, are occasionally eaten by bears, inspiring its Latin name—uva ursi, meaning “grape of the bear.”
Uva ursi leaves are astringent and rich in tannins, making them a versatile herbal ally. They can be brewed into tea, tinctured, or applied topically for their supportive properties. Traditionally, uva ursi has been combined with other herbs like buchu, cleavers, dandelion leaf, parsley fruit, or juniper berries to create synergistic herbal blends. It may also be taken in capsule form for convenience.
