Native to Florida and parts of the surrounding southeastern U.S., saw palmetto is a low-growing palm that typically reaches heights of 3 to 6 feet, but can grow up to 15 feet under rare conditions. Some saw palmetto plants in Florida are believed to be between 500 and 700 years old. It thrives in sandy soil and produces fruits from summer through October, ripening into bluish-black berries with a distinctive sweet aroma and a taste described as slightly soapy and acrid.
Historically, saw palmetto berries were consumed by Native Americans in Florida and early American settlers as a food source and tonic. In the early 1900s, American botanist John Lloyd observed the positive effects of saw palmetto on grazing animals, suggesting it could benefit humans as well. Despite scientific challenges in explaining its effects in the 1950s, the herb has continued to be used for its wellness properties.
