Organic Elder – A Versatile Herb for Health and Wellness

Elder is a flowering perennial shrub with a rich history of use for both its healthful properties and practical applications. The hollowed stems of elder plants, resembling pipes, were historically used to blow air into a fire. The flowers of Sambucus nigra and S. ebulus are pure diaphoretics, making them a popular choice for elderflower tea or inclusion in herbal blends. These flowers have also been used to infuse ales, cordials, vinegars, and waters, and are sometimes included in cosmetic formulations.

Native to most of Europe, North America, and southwest Asia, elder has long been valued in traditional European medicine for its flowers and berries. Elderberries have been used to make preserves, wines, winter cordials, and to impart color and flavor to other beverages. While elderberries are the most commonly used part of the plant for health benefits, the dried fruits are notably less bitter than their fresh counterparts. Though the branches and leaves are toxic, the small stem that may sometimes remain on the berry is safe for consumption. Once classified in the Caprifoliaceae family, elder has since been moved to the Adoxaceae family and more recently to the Viburnaceae family.

Precautions
Raw elderberries contain sambunigrin, a compound that can cause vomiting and severe diarrhea if consumed in large amounts. As with any herbal product, it is important to consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.
